Fr.John+NektariosFrom the December 2008 edition of The Bread of Life, the newsletter of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia (OMHKSEA):

On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia ordained as Deacon and as Priest Fr. John Tanveer. The new clergyman lives in Lahore Pakistan and from now on he will be the spiritual father of our Orthodox community in Lahore which has 400 Orthodox faithful. In Pakistan we have no church and for this reason the new priest will serve the Divine Liturgy and all the other Sacraments in his house. Please pray for our new Orthodox priest in Pakistan.

I don’t read or speak Greek, but with the help of online translators I’ve gleaned a little more information from the following sources: a press release from OMHKSEA from November 17, 2008, and this news article here from November 19, 2008.

The Orthodox Church in Pakistan began about four years prior to Fr. John’s ordination. Fr. John has been active in preaching and charitable works throughout Pakistan, and now that he is ordained he will be able to meet the pastoral and sacramental needs of the church. He is married with three children.

Fr. John was ordained in Greece, and spent some time before his return to Pakistan in a monastery to learn how to serve as a priest. His church, which is currently meeting in his house, is named after St. Alexander, Archbishop of Constantinople.

More recently, according to OMHKSEA’s website, in July 20-26, 2009, Metropolitan Nektarios visited the church in Pakistan:

On July 20-26, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia visited the Orthodox Community in Lahore, Pakistan. During his visit in Pakistan Metropolitan Nektarios had the opportunity to visit the Greek Ambassador in Islamambad, to serve the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation in Lahore, to discuss with the Orthodox faithful about the problems that they are facing. In Pakistan the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia has 1 Priest and 1 Orthodox Community in Lahore. In Lahore we need a building to house the Church. We use as Orthodox Chapel the house of the Orthodox Priest. The Orthodox Community in Pakistan needs support!

The picture is of Metropolitan Nektarios of Hong Kong and Fr. John Tanveer at his ordination to the priesthood. More pictures of the ordination can be seen in the official press release here, and pictures of Met. Nektarios’ recent trip to Pakistan can be seen here (just scroll down).
